Survey Highlights PostgreSQL's Role in Mitigating Cloud Outage Risks for Businesses

A recent survey commissioned by pgEdge, Inc., in partnership with The Foundry, sheds light on the growing reliance of businesses on PostgreSQL for mission-critical applications amidst concerns over cloud service outages. The findings reveal a strong preference for high availability strategies, with 91% of organizations demanding no more than 4 minutes of downtime per month for applications powered by this open-source database.

The survey, which targeted mid-to-senior IT leaders at SaaS companies and large enterprises, highlights the challenges of balancing cost with the need for high availability. Notably, 82% of respondents expressed concern over cloud region failures, and 79% are considering or evaluating distributed or purpose-built high availability PostgreSQL solutions within the next year.

PostgreSQL's deployment is widespread, with 51% of respondents using it in hybrid database environments and 35% relying on it as the principal database for customer-facing applications. The survey also points to the significant impacts of exceeding downtime thresholds, including delayed business operations and damage to brand trust, emphasizing the need for resilient database architectures.

Phillip Merrick, Co-founder and CEO of pgEdge, commented on the survey's findings, stating, "IT leaders are increasingly concerned with downtime for mission-critical applications and the risks of cloud region failure impacting their business." The survey underscores PostgreSQL's maturity and strategic importance in today's digital landscape, offering a viable solution to meet enterprise demands for high availability and distributed database architectures.
