In a blog post related to individual goals and community-mindedness, adapted from his new book The Earned Life, the renowned leadership expert and bestselling author Marshall Goldsmith talks about how the Life Plan Review can help you in other areas of your life.

“Emotional honesty invites reciprocal honesty. It motivates people to help one another. And so they connect.”

Goldsmith writes: “When using the Life Plan Review, you will notice it provides other benefits. In particular, what happens after the Life Plan Review can be more meaningful than what happens during the Life Plan Review. I learned this from my Monday Zoom groups when I discovered that so many members were connecting afterward and helping one another. I saw this phenomenon repeated with the Life Plan Reviews. It shouldn’t have surprised me, given the confessional nature of the comments in a Life Plan Review. After all, people are being asked to talk about their goals and happiness and relationships. They’re not giving a progress report on unit sales of moisturizer in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. Emotional honesty invites reciprocal honesty. It motivates people to help one another. And so they connect.”

Despite inflation, Americans continued to spend a lot of money in April, according to the latest figures. American consumers are driving demand at stores and manufacturers, despite the pinch from high inflation. Retail sales rose a seasonally adjusted 0.9% last month compared with March, the Commerce Department said, in the fourth straight month of higher retail spending.

In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories. These are particularly timely themes today.

With Goldsmith’s book as a guide, readers can close the gap between what they plan to achieve and what they actually get done—even in a world full of inescapable unfairness and curveballs—and live an earned life that is fulfilling in the long run.
